Today in 1988, British singer Billy Ocean hit Number One on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 with "Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car", the first single from his seventh album, Tear Down These Walls.
Part of its popularity lay in its cutting-edge (for the time) video, which featured cartoon mixed with live-action sequences. The song was also featured in the soundtrack of the 1988 film License to Drive, which starred "The Coreys", Corey Haim and Corey Feldman.
Billy Ocean's hit was based on the line "You walked out of my dreams, into my car" from the Sherman Brothers song "You're Sixteen".
"You're Sixteen" was first performed by American rockabilly singer Johnny Burnette, whose version peaked at number eight on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in December 1960.
In January 1974, British musician Ringo Starr hit Number One with the song and reunited him with his former Beatles bandmate Paul McCartney, who is credited on the liner notes as having played the solo on a kazoo. The 1978 video of Starr's version features Carrie Fisher as Starr's love interest.
